About the Conference

Sinophone articulations, a term emerging in recent literary and cultural studies, bespeaks the multi-sinitic literary and cultural representations produced by Chinese diasporic communities. Nanyang, or Southeast Asia, has its unique historical, cultural and geopolitical identities in Sinophone studies and discourses. The writing of Nanyang could be found in early Chinese historical documents and has gradually become abundant due to thriving exchanges between China and Southeast Asia since the late Qing dynasty. Taiwan, an island situated at the conjunction of the Far East and Southeast Asia, appeared to be a popular designation for education and settlement by many Southeast Asian Chinese during the Cold War. Subtropical Taiwan and tropical Nanyang thus have long been within each other’s contact. Focusing on the Sinophone and the writing of Nanyang, this international conference showcases the diverse articulations of Sinophone literature and culture from the perspectives of the Taiwanese, Chinese Malaysians, and Chinese Singaporeans.

The conference highlights five themes:

  1. Writing Southeast Asia in Taiwan
  2. Writing Southeast Asia in Singapore
  3. Writing Southeast Asia in Malaysia
  4. Sinophone, Writing, Publishing Enterprise, and Digital Resources
  5. Cultural Interactions between Taiwan and Malaysia
